Your GDD is already a backlog
Design docs get read once and then drift away from the actual work. Aligned turns the doc into Jira tickets so the plan and the document stay the same thing.
Here is the life cycle of most game design documents. Weeks of writing. One team read-through. A burst of enthusiasm. And then the document and the backlog begin drifting apart, quietly, until the GDD is a historical artifact and the real plan lives in Jira, in Slack threads, and in the lead's head.
Nobody decided to abandon the doc. It just costs too much to keep a document and a backlog in sync by hand, so nobody does.
The same thing happens to pitch decks, PRDs, and that fourteen-page combat design your systems designer poured a month into. The thinking is good. The translation into trackable work is the part that never quite happens.
Doc in, backlog out
Aligned reads the document the way a producer would:
- Upload the doc. GDD, PRD, pitch deck, a Google Doc full of feature notes.
- It breaks the prose into work. Features become epics. Requirements become tickets. "The player should be able to parry within a 12-frame window" becomes an implementation task with the acceptance criteria already written, because the doc already wrote them.
- You review the draft plan. Cut what is out of scope, fix estimates, assign owners.
- Sync to Jira. The doc's intent is now the backlog's structure, traceably, section by section.
When the doc changes, run it again and see what is new instead of diffing by memory.
Why we care about this one
Big-studio production offices exist partly to do this translation by hand. A producer reads the design, argues with the leads, and types the result into the tracker. It works, and it costs headcount that a five-person team does not have.
After a decade shipping God of War titles, the pattern was obvious: small teams do not fail at design or at execution. They fail in the seam between them, where nobody has time to be the translator. That seam is exactly what we automate. Docs to Jira. Meetings to Jira. Whiteboard photos to Jira. The decisions you already made, showing up as work you can actually track.
Try it in a minute
The free backlog generator is the fastest way to feel it: paste a paragraph of your design doc and watch it become sprint-ready tasks, no signup. When you are ready, the full doc-to-Jira flow is on the Free plan.
You already wrote the plan. Let it become the backlog.
